WISCONSIN — The first official weekend of summer will feature dangerous heat and humidity as temperatures across the state climb into the 90s.
Summer officially begins Friday, June 20, and our first heat wave of the season is possible this weekend. Hot and humid air will settle into the state on Saturday and linger in many areas through the start of next week on Monday.
Afternoon high temperatures on Saturday and Sunday will climb into the 90s. The hot temperatures combined with dew points in the low to middle 70s will cause dangerous heat in many places around Wisconsin as heat index values reach as high as 105 degrees.
Extreme Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories are already in effect for most of the state from Saturday afternoon through Monday evening.
The hottest heat index values will occur in the afternoon and early evenings. Overnight low temperatures will also stay warm, only falling into the 70s, which will provide little relief from the weekend heat.
If you are planning on spending any time outdoors this weekend, make sure you stay hydrated and limit strenuous outdoor activity. Wear loose fitting, light-colored clothing and spend time in the shade or air conditioning.
Remember to never leave kids or pets unattended in a vehicle. Heat is one of the most deadly weather hazards and heat-related illnesses significantly increase when the heat and humidity are this extreme. Be sure to check up on your relatives and neighbors, especially those who do not have air conditioning.
