MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee police officer Christopher McCray, who was one of two officers shot Thursday, June 26, was welcomed back to District Two a week after the incident, according to a post.
In his visit, McCray took time to see the memorial for 32-year-old police officer Kendall Corder, who died as a result of the incident.
“With humility and gratitude, Officer McCray extends his heartfelt thanks to the community, fellow officers, and agencies near and far for the overwhelming support during this difficult time. Your love has been a light in moments of darkness,” Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) said in the post.
McCray and Corder were responding to the call of a person with a weapon who was firing shots near the area of N. 25th Street and W. Garfield.
When they got to the scene, the situation quickly escalated, with the suspect firing shots at the officers in an alley of the 2200 block of N 24th Place. Officials said the suspect was allegedly hiding in the bushes when the officers arrived. The suspect has since been arrested and charged.
Corder died last Sunday. The Milwaukee community has rallied around him to mourn his death. His funeral will take place Friday, July 11, at Elmbrook Church at 777 South Barker Road in Brookfield, Wisconsin.
MPD took time to recognize both officers on July 4.
“This 4th of July, we honor Officer Corder. We celebrate Officer McCray’s strength. And we stand together — as a family, as a community, and as a nation,” the post said.
