ROCK COUNTY, Wis. — Paul VanDuyne, who is one of two suspects charged in alleged cyanide poisonings, appeared in Rock County court on July 1.
In Rock County, he is being held on $37.5 million bond, according to court records.
VanDuyne faces six felony charges in Rock County, including three counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide, one count of aggravated battery, one count of first-degree recklessly endangering safety and one count of stalking-resulting in bodily harm.
Additionally, he is being held on a $10 million bond in Dane County, where he faces three charges, per court records. Those charges include two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide and one count of stalking.
VanDuyne is accused of trying to poison two of his ex-girlfriends using cyanide, thallium and abrin.
The case prompted a huge police and hazmat response at three different homes in Madison. Those homes are on North Spooner Street, Skyline Drive and South Highlands Avenue.
Seven agents with Wisconsin’s Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) had to be hospitalized after being exposed to the chemicals or poisons they found during those searches.
Prosecutors also said the two women who previously dated VanDuyne were found to have cyanide and thallium in their cars. One of them had to be hospitalized due to the exposure to the chemical.
One of the victims also was found to have a plastic tote in the cargo area of her car, which authorities said likely contained hydrogen sulfide, which is a toxic gas. Authorities also determined that in another instance that the same victim had homemade abrin, an extremely toxic plant protein, in the ventilation of her vehicle.
Andrea Whitaker also faces charges in the case. She was bound over for trial in Dane County court on Wednesday, July 2.
VanDuyne’s next Rock County court appearance is scheduled for July 15.
