HARTFORD, Wis. — Three people were injured Monday morning after a train derailed in Hartford, prompting a hazardous materials response due to a diesel fuel leak, officials said.
Hartford Fire and Rescue crews responded around 9:20 a.m. to the railroad crossing at Independence Avenue, north of Highway 60, for a report of a train derailment. When first responders arrived, they found a Wisconsin & Southern Railroad train off the tracks just west of Independence Avenue in the city’s industrial park, near the Dodge-Washington County line.
Officials said three locomotive engines and 19 train cars had derailed. The conductor and two engineers were injured and transported by ambulance, according to Hartford Fire and Rescue.
Responders worked to contain the fuel and prevent it from reaching a nearby waterway. A tank car carrying nitrous oxide was also damaged in the derailment, but officials said it did not leak.
Several thousand gallons of diesel fuel were recovered from the scene, officials said. No firefighters or hazmat personnel were injured, and no evacuations were required.
The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
