On each street you walked down in the neighborhoods off Main Street on Friday, there was damage in sight. Brenda Watson said it was scary to relive the storm that tore through on Thursday night.
“We just got downstairs and within seconds it was over,” Watson said.
Watson said she and her husband knew severe storms were on their way, but never expected the extent of damage they got. She said they quickly got down to their basement with their dogs and, in an instant, their neighborhood was a wreck.
“I saw the damage and couldn’t believe it,” she said. “It’s just amazing how our neighbors got the worst of it on that side and again on that side. We had damage in the backyard and a little bit out in the front.”
Her neighbors had a large tree on the porch. Two houses down, the entire roof was ripped off their neighbors’ garage. Trees were down in many homes on her block.
Dan Bell, who lives in the neighborhoods off Main Street, said seeing this kind of destruction was hard.
“The devastation — these trees that I have are probably 60, 70 years old and now, they are all gone,” he said.
Bell’s yard was littered with trees that were all ripped down from the storm. He said he and his wife bunked down in their sauna during the storm and came up to see their entire yard in disarray.
He said family and friends who lent helping hands to clean up the mess left behind have made all the difference following the storm.
“I will tell you what I do see today,” Bell said. “I see help. Neighbors and family, everyone came out. I had family out here last night until 10 p.m. cutting. Just everybody wants to make sure everything is ok.”
Many neighbors in the area reflected on the damage but highlighted the inspiring sights they saw of people stepping in to help one another following the storm.
“It’s just nice to see the neighbors all come together,” Watson said. “We may not talk to them or anything, but it shows you when there is a time of need, everyone comes together.”
