WAUSAU, Wis. — An investigation is underway after police recovered the body of a 16-year-old boy from the Wisconsin River on Sunday evening.

Wausau Police said they responded to the scene near downtown Wausau at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday after receiving reports of a possible drowning. Police said witnesses described seeing the teen enter the river from the boat and kayak dock, located in 1200 block of North River Drive, and not seeing him resurface.

Wausau Fire located and recovered the 16-year-old from the water around where he was last seen close to 9:10 p.m. Officials said they immediately started “life-saving efforts,” which continued as they transported the teen to a local hospital. He was pronounced dead at that hospital.

Police said they do not suspect foul play based on preliminary findings. However, the incident is still being investigated.

“Our thoughts are with the teen’s family and friends during this difficult time,” police said.

Police have not released the name of the teen.
