LOUISVILLE, Ky. — University of Louisville's men's basketball team has a familiar face taking over as an assistant coach. For the last three years, Kahil Fennell has served as Director of Basketball Operations, Wednesday UofL announced Fennell is being promoted to assistant coach on Coach Chris Mack's staff.

"Kahil has been a tremendous asset to our program for the first three years of our tenure in his previous role as the Director of Basketball Operations," said Mack. "He has proven himself to be an extremely hard worker and well-connected with our student-athletes. Having him as a coach on the floor and in the recruiting position will do nothing but add to our program in the years to come."

"I am honored and grateful for the opportunity provided me by Coach Mack, Josh Heird and Vince Tyra to be named as an assistant coach for one of the greatest basketball programs in the country — the University of Louisville,” said Fennell. “I look forward to contributing to the storied tradition of Cardinal Basketball and am excited to compete for championships in the future."

Fennell came to UofL in April 2018 after serving as an assistant men's basketball coach at Portland State. Before Portland State, Fennell spent two seasons coaching at Texas-Permian Basin.

Fennell began his coaching career as a junior varsity coach and assistant varsity coach at Alameda (Ca.) High School in 2014-15.

Fennell earned a history degree from Redlands in 2004. He worked in the medical device industry for 10 years before transitioning into coaching. 

Mack and the university didn't renew the contracts of two assistant coaches, Dino Gaudio and Luke Murray, in March.
