MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. — Brevard County officials say two people were killed Wednesday in Merritt Island when a crane collapsed at a construction site.

The crane was over the unfinished Cape Canaveral Hospital at 255 Borman Drive when the incident happened around 2 p.m.

The two injured were taken to a nearby hospital where they later died.

The identities of the victims have not been released, pending notification of their families.

Health First, the health system that will operate Cape Canaveral Hospital, released a statement calling what happened a "serious" and "deeply concerning" weather-related incident and that they are "monitoring the situation closely with local authorities and Gilbane, the construction management company on the project."

Additionally, Health First stated none of their associates were on site at the time.

A spokesperson for Gilbane Building Company says the two people killed are not employees of Gilbane, rather two trade contractor workers, one employed by Baker Concrete and another contractor.

"We share our deepest condolences with the families, loved ones, and co-workers," the Gilbane spokesperson said. "The site is secure and work is currently suspended. We are supporting our trade contractor and working with them and the authorities on an active investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

Brevard County Sheriff's Office deputies initially stated there would be a press conference Wednesday evening, but now say that will not be happening.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
