WISCONSIN — The U.S. struck three Iranian nuclear sites on Saturday.
Mohi Amini is an Iranian American who has lived in the United States for over 50 years. He said he still has family in Iran with whom he speaks to daily. He followed up with them after the strikes, and he said they reassured him they were all okay.
Mohi Amini said he has mixed feelings about war.
“I don’t like war, I don’t want my country to be attacked, I don’t want the country to be destroyed and more importantly, I’m very concerned about the safety of all Iranians, and my family,” said Amini.
Mohi Amini’s wife, Cindy, said she’s been to Iran many times, and considers it a beautiful, rich and advanced culture. She and her husband said they both hope that soon, there will be a shift in regime and the culture will flourish again.
The couple was freshly reflecting on the developments in the Middle East, all while celebrating Mohi Amini’s daughter’s wedding in Wisconsin. After watching the bride walk down the aisle, the rights of women in the Middle East are also top of mind.
“As a mother of two girls, obviously women’s rights are foremost on our minds and it is something that we are always in tune with and thinking about,” Cindy Amini said. “There are a lot of countries oppressing women, but this one is one of the worst, if not the worst.”
Both Mohi and Cindy Amini said that the Iranian people need a chance to come out of the shadows and not be oppressed by their government. They both also said that their views do not represent those of all Iranians in Wisconsin or around the world.
They said they believe that everyone’s views have the right to be respectively heard.
“This might be paving the way for the Iranian people to come out. I’m not sure how any people know this in America, but 85% to 90% of Iranians don’t like this government,” said Mohi Amini. “They’ve been waiting for someone to help and give them a boost and this is the boost that they needed.”
