MILWAUKEE — The first day of Summerfest this year coincides with the 54th Juneteenth Celebration in Milwaukee, so organizers of both came together to interweave their respective celebrations.
"In Milwaukee, we celebrate Juneteenth on June 19, regardless of the day [of the week]," said Tony Kearney, executive director of the Northcott Neighborhood House which organizes the Milwaukee Juneteenth celebration. "Summerfest has a new format where they're doing three [long] weekends in a row, so it falls on Juneteenth this year. Summerfest is turning 57. Juneteenth is turning 54. We're in a city of festivals—we decided we needed to come together to see if we could enhance both festivals and get more people to come to Milwaukee."
For those looking forward to the traditional Juneteenth celebration up Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Milwaukee, though, fear not.
"Juneteenth is a 1.7 mile celebration," Kearney said. "The Jubilee Parade has 203 current entrants."
