OHIO — Cities across the Buckeye State are opening cooling centers to give Ohioans a chance to cool off amid the extreme August heat this week. 

Cincinnati

The City of Cincinnati has activated all recreation centers to operate as cooling centers this week during the extreme heat.

The Cincinnati Recreation Commission said it'll reevaluate the need for any hour extensions as the week progresses, but as of now, the recreation centers will be open during normal business hours.

Additionally, eight spray grounds are open daily, along with two pools that are open at 4 p.m. on weekdays. More information on those can be found here.

Cleveland

As for Cleveland, the following rec centers will extend their hours until 10 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday:

  • Gunning 
  • Michael Zone 
  • Collinwood 
  • Zelma George 

Akron

All Akron community centers will be open during normal hours as cooling centers for residents. A list of centers and their hours can be found here. 

Columbus

Five regional community centers will be open for residents to cool off as the heat continues. The centers will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Wednesday, Aug. 28 to Friday, Aug. 30.

The centers include:

  • Driving Park Community Center, 1100 Rhoads Ave., 43206
  • Glenwood Community Center, 1888 Fairmont Ave., 43223
  • Linden Community Center, 1350 Briarwood Ave., 43211
  • Marion Franklin Community Center, 2801 Lockbourne Road, 43207

The $1 fee for Dodge and Driving Park pools will be waived from Wednesday to Friday, and they will be open from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on those days. Capacity limits may be enforced, and a free Leisure Card is needed for admission.

The Barnett, Blackburn, Linden and Scioto Southland spraygrounds will be open from 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. from Wednesday to Friday too.
