MERCER COUNTY, Ohio — The National Weather Service has confirmed that a “landspout tornado” touched down Saturday evening in Mercer County.

“A landspout tornado is an area of rotation starting at the ground (like a dust-devil), and the rotation gets stretched toward the cloud typically near a front, weaker winds near the ground and a strong updraft,” Spectrum News 1 Ohio meteorologist Eric Elwell said.

Since the storm did not cause any damage, NWS has rated the storm as an EF-U (unknown). Tornadoes need to hit a speed of 65 MPH to be rated as an EF-0.

This confirmation brings the state’s total tornado count to 36 for the year.
