COLUMBUS, Ohio - All of this time at home may have you going stir crazy and looking for a new hobby. Gardening may be your answer.

What You Need To Know

  • Generations have planted seeds during difficult times including throughout both World Wars

  • Today, many people are growing gardens to become less reliant on grocery stores because of the pandemic

  • The topic has reached peak popularity on Google web search.

Lacie and Cody Phillips have been gardening for the last few years and said they decided to expand their garden because of the pandemic.

"I think a lot of it is we start in our basement with really small seedlings, so we kind of do it together," Lacie said. "This year it was everything from peppers and lettuce, tomatoes and a lot of herbs to cook with and try fun cocktails and things."

"There's this kind of  misconception that you have to have a giant yard to garden. I mean we started gardening in a tiny two bedroom apartment on the balcony, so it's really as long as you've got some patience and some dirt and some seeds, it's definitely an easy approachable hobby," Cody said.

According to the Ohio Farm Bureau, now may be the best time to plant seeds because we've likely seen the last frost of the season.
