COLUMBUS, Ohio—With just hours until the budget deadline, it seems the House and Senate have finally struck a deal.

  • Main discrepancies are tax cuts, LLC Loophole and state healthcare funding
  • DeWine says he’ll likely use line-item veto power
  • Chambers will vote on the budget Wednesday

Leaders from both chambers met for a conference committee on Monday to hammer out compromises on nearly 600 points of contention between the two versions.

Chief among those discrepancies—how much to cut taxes, whether to include the so-called “LLC Loophole,” and how to tackle healthcare funding in the state.

Today’s conference committee is a sign of a materializing final version.

But even if both chambers pass it tomorrow, that doesn’t mean this budget is a done deal.

It has one final hurdle, and that is Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s line-item veto power, which he says he’ll probably use to nix parts of the deal.

“I’m sure there will be some line-item vetoes…there always are, but we’re trying to get a budget that does not have too many of those,” said DeWine.

DeWine didn’t specify what exactly he would line-item veto, but he’ll have until midnight tomorrow do exercise that power.

Both chambers are expected to vote on the budget Wednesday afternoon.
