Tuesday, June 24th at the State House in Boston Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey signed into law a $1.3 billion supplemental budget for investments in public transportation and education. The funds for the supplemental budget were generated from the state's Fair Share, or Millionaire's Tax, surtax. The Fair Share surtax creates a four percent tax on a portion of a person's income above $1 million. The Healey Administration said $758 million will support transportation needs like maintenance for roads and bridges as well as regional transit authorities. Another $561 million will benefit all levels of education in Massachusetts by providing support for higher education institutions, expanding vocational programs and supporting school districts with the rising costs of special education.

Governor Healey, "These improvements will cut traffic times, reduce commutes and grow our economy in every region across the state. This funding will provide thousands of kids from kindergarten through third grade with one on one individualized tutoring sessions. It's going to make a big difference for our kids."

The funding comes from the $2.6 billion in surtax revenue collected in fiscal year 2024. $1 billion was appropriated in the fiscal year 2024 budget.
