NEWPORT, Ky. — Amazon, California-based organization Baby2Baby and First Lady Britainy Beshear, D-Ky., came together to ensure families affected by recent natural disasters would gain access to much-needed diapers and baby formula.
Volunteers, staff and the first lady unloaded boxes filled with diapers and baby formula. The donation included 100,000 diapers and 1,000 cans of formula.
The partnership between the two companies was sparked to bring relief straight to families still struggling after floods swept across several states, leaving many families without necessities.
“It reminds us that we're all interconnected," Beshear said. "When these babies and families are thriving, their communities are thriving. It's not just one particular thing. I think there's a lot of inter-connectivities that go on with just this one act of kindness.”
Groups such as Brighton Center, United Way Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Community Actions Commission will distribute to families in need.
“In our partnership with Baby2Baby, we know those are some of the unmet needs that go on after the initial disaster," said Ian Conyers, Amazon head of community affairs. "We want to continue to support those families with all of their needs."
For mothers such as Bridgette Barnes and Brianna Holt, recipients connected with Brighton Center, the gesture means the world and shows the important of helping those in need.
“It's heartwarming," Barnes said. "Especially single moms, single dads, couples, everybody is struggling right now. The economy is not at its best. But I watched the normal diapers I bought go from $20 [a] box to $30 a box in one week. I know it's got to help some people.”
"It's the most beautiful thing we can do as people, and I hope it inspires and encourages other people, other businesses to help out the next person, because that's what God put us here for as each other," Holt said.
With every box unloaded, the message was clear: with a helping hand, there is hope.
