LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Metro Council president David James is stepping down from his post.

James (D) who represents downtown Louisville in the 6th District, announced Thursday he would not run for council president in 2023.

He has served on the Louisville Metro Council since 2010 and has been president since 2018. Before joining the council, James was a Louisville Metro police officer and detective..

During the Majority Caucus meeting on Dec. 1, James said, “It’s time for somebody else to do this.”

Mayor-elect Craig Greenberg (D) selected James to be a member of his transition team. James is a co-chair, along with Dana Mayton, of Greenberg’s city budget and operations committee.

James planned to run for Louisville mayor, but withdrew because of health concerns.

Even though James is leaving the council presidency, he has not said he is leaving the council. In January, there will be 17 Democrats and 9 Republicans on Metro Council.
