MILWAUKEE, Wisc. — The Brewers' game scheduled for Saturday night at Miller Park was postponed because more members of the visiting St. Louis Cardinals traveling party tested positive for COVID-19.

The Brewers also lost one of their star players because of the pandemic uncertainty.

Friday's home opener was postponed after two Cardinals tested positive from tests taken Wednesday in Minnesota. After rapid COVID-19 testing on Friday at the Milwaukee hotel where they were self-isolating, four more members of the Cardinals traveling party, including one more player, tested positive, leading to Saturday night's postponement.

Sunday's scheduled doubleheader is still on for now.

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred told ESPN:

"We are playing. The players need to be better, but I am not a quitter in general and there is no reason to quit now. We have had to be fluid, but it is manageable.”

Manfred held a conference call with owners Saturday and they want to keep going. At least for now.

The COVID-19 uncertainties have now impacted the Brewers' roster.

Respected clubhouse leader and gold-glove winning outfielder Lorenzo Cain opted out of the 2020 season. He reportedly gives up close to six million dollars to do so. Cain has a wife and three young sons.

Brewers president of baseball operations and general manager David Stearns says the Brewers respected the decision.

"He felt this was something he needed to do...This was something that Lorenzo had been thinking about for a while."

Ben Gamel is one possibility to play center field.

MLB's struggles are a sobering sign for any sport hoping to play without a bubble this fall like the NFL and college football.
